CEN and CENELEC have published two new standardization documents (CEN Workshop Agreements), related to indoor air quality:

CWA 18407:2026 Introductory Human-Centric Exposure Modelling (H-CEM) method for estimating exposure to indoor air PM2,5

CWA 18408:2026 Protocol for quantification of exposure to Ultrafine Particles as part of Indoor Air Quality study

These documents have been promoted by the EU funded research and innovation project TwinAIR , and are based on project outcomes. They are publicly available in CEN-CENELEC website.

The first one specifies a Human-Centric Exposure Modelling (H-CEM) approach to estimate human exposure in occupied indoor environments. The H-CEM method integrates information on indoor particle concentrations, environmental and airflow conditions, and human physiological characteristics to assess inhaled particulate matter under realistic conditions.

The second on establishes a refined protocol for indoor exposure investigation to ultrafine particles, comprising a two-step approach through information gathering and on-site measurements (defining the requirements for structuring a scoping questionnaire and using portable measurement equipment).

Both CWAs complement the standardization framework set in the family of ISO 16000 standards and do not replace them in any aspect.

The publication of these two standardization documents is a way to put in value the project results and make them easy to find and apply by the industry and public administrations, supporting public health of the people inhabiting the indoor spaces through community awareness and policy making.
